Production Cels and Other Toys: For Real? Empty Production Cels and Other Toys: For Real?

...And I came across random merchandise that seem to be the real deal, as in very RARE and very hard to find. The first one is of our beloved Evil Emperor Zurg.

http://www.amazon.com/Buzz-Lightyear-Star-Command-Production/dp/B0092RARAU/ref=sr_1_36?ie=UTF8&qid=1346114922&sr=8-36&keywords=buzz+lightyear+of+star+command

Can you believe the pic?! This original production cel and drawing looks genuine enough, AND it's from the show itself! There's only one left, though, and it's more than $400. It sure is nifty, though! Too bad they got the name wrong. Bah...ah well.

Speaking of prices, there is another production cel I came across, this time it's of Buzz himself. http://www.animationconnection.com/view/b0060c-buzz-lightyear

It looks nifty as well, and it's from the show too! Buzz here looks awfully upset at something. Maybe he's upset at the lack of merchandise from the show. XD

And to our final product for the evening, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you toys from Australia!

http://www.webring.org/l/rd?ring=disneyring;id=1;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Egeocities%2Ews%2Fozzilady%2Fdisney%2Ehtml

These toys look awesome...and they have an ACTUAL Mira toy! Pretty cool, eh? I don't know if this site is still active or if the seller is still around to make any deals, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Now if only we can influence Disney to make more merchandise...

Good find, albeit expensive! The production cels are definitely something a dedicated collector would want, and I know for sure that I couldn't afford it any time soon.

As for the toys, the site seems to have last been updated in 2003, so I doubt there's much of a chance of still getting them from that seller. I see the Australian McD's toys on ebay from time to time, so it's a lucky find there if you happen upon it.

I also happened to find this from the same site as the second link: http://www.animationconnection.com/view/B1045-buzz-lightyear

I saw that as well. (sighs) Alas, the cruel hand of fate sets these prices too high for us to buy...oh well. xD

Wow, these cels are awesome! Nice finds, Fox! I thought of buying one of them... before I realised that it was $15.00 for shipping, not the cel... not one of my smarter moments...

But if I were to get one of those cels, I'd get the Buzz screaming one - I don't recognise the episode, but it would really be awesome to have framed on the bedroom wall!

I've seen those Mc Donalds figures elsewhere, and, other than the Mc Donalds spinning top/ball-thingy of Mira, that's the only toy they ever made of her (to my extensive knowledge...). Unfortunately, it isn't to scale with the Mattel figures. That set would be nice to have, though.

I enquired about the animation cels at Animation Connection and I've got one on its way to me now! I'm not entirely sure which episode it's from, but it's a still of Buzz paying attention to his "Ranger-sense" in what looks like Gravitina's palace.

The site put up two other cels when I enquired - one of Buzz with the LGMs in The Adventure Begins, and one of him flying the combat platform thingy in War and Peace and War. Though the cel of him yelling has gone, the production drawing is still there.

Do you mean this one?

Strangely enough, the background was used on the LGMs' home world, in the room where they keep the Uni-Mind. I don't think it's actually from The Adventure Begins, however, since I can't find that scene in the episode. Either they cut this scene out or they reused the background elsewhere. Unless they went back to the LGMs' home world in one episode during the series and I just happen to not remember it.

Well spotted Alexa, my other guess for that room was the LGM Uni-Mind room, since the architecture seemed to match that of the entrance passage from memory. However, like you said, I discarded that thought when I remembered that Buzz never enters that room in normal lighting. Perhaps it's a deleted scene, or one from a lost episode (though the latter is less likely due to Tad Stones claiming that there were no lost episodes)?

I once browsed the web for more cels and found a bunch. I saved them somewhere even don't remember. If I find them, I'll share them with you guys. Smile

But yes, as far as I know, most cels are genuine. Only unrecognizable cels make me ponder sometimes, but that can always be due to background/foreground mix-ups. I think it's happened before.

Yup, just checked The Adventure Begins, the background is from when the LGMs are protecting the Uni-Mind, at the moment when they say "We are powerful!". Looks like a background mix-up, like you said Steel! I still haven't found what episode the Buzz is from though, but it definitely looks like a Jade Animation episode.

Got the cel through the post a few days ago, absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to get it framed!

Also, I FINALLY found which scene the image of Buzz on my cel is from - it's when Buzz hears Booster and XR in 42's armoury in The Adventure Begins. Here are the background and cel in action:

Production Cels and Other Toys: For Real? Celima10 Production Cels and Other Toys: For Real? Celbac10

Also, while flicking through Jade Animation's episodes, I realised two things:
  • That most of the cels available online are from Jade episodes (namely, The Adventure Begins, Wirewolf, and War and Peace and War), bar the Zurg one on Amazon, which is from Panic on Bathyos.
  • That a lot of the more recent cels (specifically the ones on the Animation Connection website) have different backgrounds - the image of Buzz on the combat flyer from War and Peace and War seems to be on a background of the inside of Star Command's control centre, my cel had a background and a cel from two different The Adventure Begins scenes, and that image of Buzz yelling a while back (now sold) was from War and Peace and War, yet I remember it having an alleyway background rather than the correct space one.

Regarding the McDonald's figures, if you look at this image from the bid I posted on the eBay topic:

Production Cels and Other Toys: For Real? $(KGrHqJ,!h4FCV6RunVtBQmC!-6ssQ~~60_12

I'm surprised to say that Mira seems to fit in well with the main 6" line. Obviously I don't think the same would apply to the Buzz or Zurg figures (as their 6" figures would probably be a fair bit taller than them), but with a little modification (specifically, cutting the plastic out from between her arms and sides, and possibly cutting the feet off and extending the legs with clay), I think Mira would look good on display with the other figures.

From what I've heard, BLoSC's toy line was part of Toy Story 2's toy line, but separate from it at the same time. I don't get it.

Yes, in order to market the toys at a slightly wider audience, the toys were released under the Toy Story line. The first wave of toys came in packaging with green highlights and the Toy Story 2 logo, while the second wave (which, as far as I'm aware, only consisted of further 6" figures) came with orange highlights and the Toy Story and Beyond! logo, since Toy Story 2 had long gone by then.

I guess that, if one were to go for a complete Toy Story 2 collection, the first wave of BLoSC toys would count on their checklist. Otherwise, it's safe to class BLoSC as its own toyline, since it wasn't just a special line of figures like, for example, the Toy Story Rocket Force or Alien Zone lines.

Well, folks, I have some bad news that I have to share. The site where I found the cels...they're all out of print. In other words, even if they appear on the website, they're not actually in stock. The studio is all out of the cels of Buzz Lightyear. :/

@Olivus: Well, Zurg's slightly taller than Booster, so it should be fine. Buzz, on the other hand, would need a lot of work. Otherwise, I wish you luck with the Mira toy!

@Windows7Guy100: Yeah, like Olivus said, the toys were marketed under the Toy Story franchise. But I didn't know about the green highlights! I thought it all belonged to the Toy Story and Beyond branch...

@FoxStorm: Wait, what do you mean? Which site was that?

Animation Connection I believe, though the pages for each cel still exist and feature links to order them. I think when I enquired about the yelling Buzz one, they took it down upon realising it was out of stock, so they may well be gone...

On another note, I emailed the owner of that Australian site, and she said she had meant to close it years ago. She searched among the remaining toys she had in storage for me and couldn't find the BLoSC figures.

Right you are, Olivus! I tried to get a cel sheet, but I was told that the company who made the cels don't make the Buzz ones anymore. They're all out of stock, and may cease to exist. :/
