Idea - New BLoSC Video Game
Sorry in advance Steel... I had no idea where to put this thread!
Anyway, for a while now (probably since I finished the series for the first time) I've been thinking about a possible Buzz Lightyear of Star Command video game. I know there's one that came out with the series (I've got it and it's great fun, even challenging at random points), but that felt more like a required cash-in than a full game with a flowing plot. So here are my ideas for a new game that would be quite different:
What do you guys think?
Anyway, for a while now (probably since I finished the series for the first time) I've been thinking about a possible Buzz Lightyear of Star Command video game. I know there's one that came out with the series (I've got it and it's great fun, even challenging at random points), but that felt more like a required cash-in than a full game with a flowing plot. So here are my ideas for a new game that would be quite different:
- The gameplay style would be an action-adventure, perhaps with some platforming mixed in. I envisaged the camera view being over-shoulder 2nd person perspective, as it has been used to great narrative effect in two of my favourite video game adaptions, Ghostbusters and Transformers: War for Cybertron (it was used very effectively in both to capture the essence of the characters, while allowing the player to still be in the midst of the action). Otherwise a mix of 3rd and 2nd person perspectives (a la Toy Story 3) could be used for a mix of platforming and shooter action.
- Going on to the action, a lot of the time players will be shooting it out using weapons taken straight out of the show, with different weapons for either side (Star Command guns and LGM gadgets for the heroes, illegal weaponry such as Plasma Cannons and Zurgatronic Ion Blasters for the villains).
- Players would be able to play as a variety of characters from the show, on both sides - Space Ranger and Criminal storylines would both be available. Playing through the missions for the first time will have you playing as set characters as part of the plot of the game, afterwards you can replay the mission with any character, out of plot context (a bit like the recent LEGO games really). Some missions would be stories from the show (NOS-4-A2 and The Lightyear Factor are two with potential) while others would be brand new tales, following an over-arching plot. The final hero mission could even serve as a series finale.
- Online multiplayer! Players are able to customise their own Ranger/criminal using races and armour seen in the show, before battling it out on one of many arenas on a variety of different planets.
- I thought that the soundtrack for the game could be a mix of Adam Berry’s soundtrack for the series, and the music heard in the Buzz Lightyear rides and Toy Story 2 (in the Buzz video game). The ride music I thought could make for quite an alien/epic main theme, while the Toy Story 2 music would be suitable as an adventurous theme for Buzz himself.
- The game would be on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC, and it could possibly have 3DS and PS Vita adaptions. I know that, in reality, a low-profile game like this would most likely be relegated to Nintendo consoles, but I just think that the other consoles are in need of more light-hearted games – the Toy Story games have been very popular on PS3.
What do you guys think?

Re: Idea - New BLoSC Video Game
I personally love the idea. Especially going with different platforms. And, also, I'm a big personal fan of cutscenes. Maybe there could be a few littered here and there, such as at the beggining to get the plot rolling with a bang?
And I like the idea of the over-the-shoulder second person view. I've played the perspective a few times (though not much) and found it a lot more exciting than third-person POVs.
And, HURRAY you suggested playing from the villain or hero's side! I love it when people do that because you can use your favorite character (if you dont like the hero) to kick butt instead of beating them up! But, I think you should be able to choose a few different characters as the levels go on. Such as, in a wirewolf battle you could play Wirewolf or a hero and on the next level you can play, say, Warp or a hero of choice (depending on the side and mission)
Another suggestion, I dont know if you were thinking this, but have varying assignments within the missions when you go back to replay with other characters?

Oh yes, there would plenty of cutscenes! Like you say, they're obviously very good for the narrative of the game. Alongside a few scattered cinematic cutscenes (beginning/end of level, before boss fights), I thought that it would be good for the characters to frequently communicate with each other during the levels.

A great suggestion, and one that seems to link the concept of the game even more to the recent LEGO games - in those, you could replay levels as different characters with different abilities, and thus gain access to further areas. Maybe special abilities could include super strength, flight, different types of weaponry, and perhaps even racial abilities (e.g. Mira and other tangeans can ghost). Perhaps the secret areas could even lead into secret missions?

Re: Idea - New BLoSC Video Game
I love this idea.
Maybe multiplayer could also have co-op? It would be a lot of fun to be able to play through the story/missions with friends.
I liked the the BLoSC action game, but I always found it annoying how you couldn't play as the other characters. They only got to assist in minor roles. Having an AI play the other team members along side you would be interesting.
