What's she like? Personality-wise?

...Strange question, but how do you pronounce "Rikaena"? I automatically pronounce "ae" as a long I, so I'm reading it as "rih-KIGH-nuh", but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I know you said she doesn't like to be called this name, but I'd still like to know for the heck of it. ^^;

Rih-KAY-nuh maybe? That's how I pronounced it in my head.

Almost correct, Ranger-Nova! It would really be rih-KAY-nah, but most people would pronounce it as "nuh" at the end anyway, so... *shrugs and grins*
And personality! *facepalm* Knew I was missing something!
Erin and Ice, knowing and sharing in Ricki's Sherlockian obsessions, would say that Ricki has Sherlock's intelligence but Watson's personality. In other words, Ricki doesn't want to be a leader unless she has to be - she'd much rather play the part of the sidekick.
She's typically good-humored and, when she and the girls are "roleplaying" Star Trek, will let Windy get away with calling her a "green-blooded hobgoblin." The girls will joke about Ricki playing Spock to Erin's Kirk, but Ricki is much closer in personality to Major Samantha Carter of Stargate SG-1.
Ricki is dedicated, hardworking, and ambitious, but she also likes to have fun. Being knowledgeable, quick-witted, and funny, she makes a terrific conversationalist.
Her currently greatest pet-peeve is Windy bashing Sherlock Holmes, because, after all, one does not bash a fangirl's hero.

Re: Ricki Sunflare
Whoa, wait a second. Was she a child prodigy or something? I doubt anybody could enter college at 14 and have an astrophysics degree (given the level of technology and knowledge in the BLoSCverse) at 19. 'Cause to have a Master's degree requires at least 6 years of study minimum. And that's for regular degrees.
Also... Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, Stargate SG-1... I don't see how she would like these things. Sure, she might have an interest in human history and have heard of these things vaguely, but... think of Homer. Of Roman classics, etc. I highly doubt that in 1000 years into the future (if we're going with BLoSC being in the future, which I think we are) people would still like these willingly. Or that everything pertaining to them will have been properly salvaged.
Otherwise, I really like the idea of you using an existing species in the show for your character and like the idea of her being interested in the investigation part of being a Space Ranger. What's her culture like? Have you thought that up yet? I'd be curious to hear more about it.
I also really like her name!

Re: Ricki Sunflare
I do have a bit of backstory, at least, developed for the Derriyans, but that will have to wait for a future date. I am glad that you like that I’m using a pre-existing race (and that you like her name!). Right now, my focus with Ricki is fleshing her out, contrasting her with her dorm-mates, and developing her very important friendship with Erin.
Actually, I do have precedents for both the astrophysics bit and the Earth culture bit.
Actually, I do have precedents for both the astrophysics bit and the Earth culture bit.
- Spoiler:
1. Astrophysics.
So, it’s a tentative precedent, but it derives from Star Trek XI’s script (which can be found at IMSDb). Hikaru Sulu says, “I’m a PhD in astrophysics, I think I can handle it—how’d you get back?” Which, of course, means that he’s a prodigy, as he can’t be any older than mid-20s.
At any rate, Ricki herself really is a prodigy, the fact of which is well-established in Breakaway by now. She’s coming to be known as the Academy’s wunderkind for her intelligence. I mean, a 19-yr-old with a M.S. in astrophysics? Gotta be a genius-kid.
"I'm an astrophysicist," Ricki explained as they walked. "At least, that was what I got my Masters degree in."
Erin's jaw dropped. "You have a Masters? How old are you?"
"Nineteen."
Erin's eyebrows hit her hairline. "Holy cow, I'm talking to a prodigy! And you want to be a Space Ranger… why?"
2. Earth Culture.
Strong precedents in both Star Trek and Stargate SG-1. Granted, the latter takes place in the timeframe it was being produced, but it still applies thanks to the humanoid Teal’c. Teal’c is a major Star Wars fan and even knows certain bits of pop culture that Earthling Daniel Jackson doesn’t know. Star Trek in general, on the other hand, seems to like the same thing I do: infusing the space-traveling future with a little bit of Earth culture. And I’m not just talking about Klingons quoting Shakespeare, either—even if Kirk and Spock utterly fail at being inconspicuous in the year 1986, they still have an apparently decent knowledge of the time period’s fiction. Kirk once even quotes, not Barrie’s book Peter Pan, but Disney’s movie: “Second star to the left and straight on ‘til morning.” And Data, an android existing in the 24th century, idolizes Sherlock Holmes.
Now as to the believability of it… I don’t come up with this stuff randomly. I really don’t. If I have plot points, I do have justification for them—YMMV on how strong it is, but it’s there. In this case… With the technology that we have in our present day to copy and preserve data—be it film or printed words—I think that it would have to take centuries (if not, indeed, millennia) for certain fiction to fade away. It takes only a couple of fans to keep something alive and even revive it.
In the case of Star Trek, that wouldn’t even be necessary. Star Trek is too big, too timeless. Because of the themes it deals with and the ways in which it deals with those themes, it will live on… even for another thousand years. Though I didn’t mention Star Wars, I firmly believe the same applies.
As for Stargate SG-1… well, the fact that the original series became one of the longest-running sci-fi shows in American history and that it’s garnered two spin-off series and two spin-off movies says that there’s something special there. Maybe it’s not always as serious as Star Trek… and maybe it doesn’t have to be to survive. It has a fascinating premise with mankind and his past and present involvement with alien and ascended beings that I really could see intriguing even aliens a thousand years from now. Plus, the heroes don’t quite make mistakes like heroes do in other stories… because the SG-1 team has learned from the mistakes of heroes in other stories. That alone makes Stargate SG-1 special and worth watching.
Now, on to Sherlock Holmes. In Breakaway Chapter 10, Erin and Ricki have this exchange:
Erin: “It’s just amazing how Sherlock Holmes has not only survived eleven centuries but also spread across the galaxy! Talk about enduring fame!”
Ricki: “The truths he gave us, the truths Watson presented, are universal. They’re just as applicable now in the thirty-first century galaxy-at-large as they were in nineteenth-century London.”
And Ricki’s right. Sherlock Holmes, in his enduring popularity, is proving to be one of the most timeless literary figures in human history. Heroic adventures, intriguing mysteries, incredible critical-thinking and deductive skills, witty dialogue, universal themes, the romance of a bygone era… it’s no wonder Ricki loves the Great Detective so much! Not only that, but it must be remembered that Sherlock Holmes is a mythical figure not only in the world of fiction but in the world of (human) law enforcement. He left a lasting legacy—modern police owe a lot to him. He would still be known in 31st century for that reason alone.
3. Ice
Cadet Isadore “Ice” Ellemore, one of Ricki’s mates is a Tangean Royal. Isadore, who insisted on being called by her nickname “Ice,” was eighteen and had idolized Princess Mira all her life—her parents were none too happy that Ice was following in Mira's footsteps. Ice tells her team that her family is very strictly Tangean Isolationist: “that means they avoid Off-Worlder stuff like the plague.” Whereas Erin, Ricki, and Windy are “Dangerously Genre Savvy,” Ice is “Genre Blind”. She barely knows anything about pop culture, either 31st century or 21st.
One of the recurring themes in Dorm Team 76’s dynamics is that the other girls are teaching Ice pop culture. Thanks to Erin and Ricki, Ice is becoming a Sherlockian. The easily-irritated and emphatically un-Sherlockian Windy complains often about the things Ice still needs to learn—for example, the words ain’t and beserk. Ice is always innocently asking questions, and, if she asks enough of them in a five-minute-period, it will be enough to make the other girls groan.
The reason I’m saying all this is because I’m really not all “la-di-dah, all aliens know old Earthling stuff.” Ice works as a perfect example, and so does Eda-Ji-Kep, a male cadet:
“Ooo, I’d love to see Cody as a crater!” Clutch grinned gleefully.
Eda-Ji-Kep frowned. “How could this process of turning Cody-Ric-Ardo into a crater be accomplished?”
The other boys groaned. “Ice ain’t the only alien in our group who needs a heavy dose of galactic culture,” Clutch moaned without a trace of irony at his own non-human status.
