LEGO BLoSC Empty LEGO BLoSC

Post by Olivus Prime Sat Oct 15, 2011 10:19 am

I'm a big fan of LEGO, and always have been. Obviously then, I was hyper-excited when LEGO Toy Story was announced, and once I got back into Buzz Lightyear, many ideas popped into my head.

With the lack of a complete action figure line for BLoSC, my first idea was to make customised minifigures from the show. I have a pretty good knowledge of LEGO minifigure parts, so it didn't take long for me to envision what the figures might look like. As of writing, I have only been able to 98% complete XR, due to my commitments to the recent Transformers merchandise. However, I have created digital mockups for Mira and Booster, and I have firm ideas as to what I will use for Warp, Zurg's Grubs, Hornets, Anti-Buzz, Evil Buzz, and the Brain Pods.

In addition, I thought a few sets would be cool to make. At some stage in the far future, I'll materialise my plans for a Star Cruiser 42 model using LEGO Digital Designer. I have thought about making a ship for Zurg, too.

Anyways, I'll occasionally post pictures of my creations in this topic, and I hope that they inspire you to create and show your own creations!

The digital mockups for XR, Mira and Booster. XR uses C-3P0's head, purple hands, grey short legs, and Buzz's torso and Pulsar-400 suit. Mira uses Poison Ivy's hair, Aayla Secura's head, and Buzz's torso and legs. Booster uses EV-9D9's head, and Buzz's body parts. I am aware of the lack of resemblance in Booster - it was the best head I could find! I may consider modifying one of the new Alien Conquest alien heads to be used.

I've started work on a 42 model in Lego Digital Designer, and so far, so good. On the outside, I'm aiming to make it a scale replica of the Andromeda-Class cruiser (not in scale with minifigures). On the inside, however, in the vein of the Lego Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer, Tantive IV, Executor etc, I have hollowed the ship out and have completed constuction on three minifigure-scale rooms, accurate to their appearances in the cartoon. These rooms include:

- The Bridge, complete with loads of cool computers, lights and buttons, and three comfy chairs for the crew members. XR gets his flashy computer panel, of course!
- The Prison Bay, with one prison cell. The cell is locked with a grid of lightsaber-blade lasers. A table and cup accompany whoever's unlucky enough to be held in here. I actually made the cell taller than necessary, just in case I ever make a Gravitina figure!
- The Engine Room, with the engines and a few computers (including the one where 42 becomes sentient).

The ship is currently priced at around £60.00 ($96.00!!!) and it's barely half built! Let the saving commence...

That's a cool idea. I've heard of people making custom characters. I think some people even use paint to change the faces and hair.

Creating new designs using stickers or paint is sometimes quite a good idea (I used stickers to recreate Rocket Racer from the LEGO Racers game), I'm not entirely convinced by them - often a sticker can protrude from the rest of a figure's head (making it hard to connect or remove hats or hair), and painting at such a small scale is a tricky process (I won't mention my Warhammer 40k misadventures...). I think that Mira is near-perfect, but I think Booster and perhaps XR could be improved. I usually try to use readily available parts first, before considering custom alternatives.

Thanks! I'll probably work on 42 tonight, so I'll try to get some screenshots posted!

My Internet Explorer kept crashing last night, so here are the screenshots. Note that the random construction workers are used for scale and design:

I apologise for the lack of updates recently - the school work gets heavier and heavier, so I haven't been able to work on this much (or any other BLoSC-related stuff, really).

Have you heard the news?

LEGO's DesignByMe service is ending soon, and the final orders take place somewhen in January. Yikes! Between then and now, I'll primarily use my free time for completing this project, so that I can purchase it while the elements are available in an easy and (relatively) cheap way.

Currently the walls and nose of the cruiser are seeing completion - expect to see further images soon!

42 has come to completion! There are a few minor details that I missed out, such as the purple shapes and ship numbers on each side of the ship, but I hope to add the ship number using stickers later. Purple bricks aren't in huge supply in the DesignByMe catalogue, so I've substituted with dark grey for now. Perhaps in the future I'll replace them with purple ones from Bricklink.
At 1143 bricks, it will be my second largest LEGO set (after my Star Wars Sandcrawler), and will definitely be my most expensive at £180!!! After this, I'll likely go back to designing new figures, and buying them, eventually.

Anyway, enjoy, and if you would like to download 42, for modification, viewing or purchase, PM me.

Oh wow! The final product turned out awesome! I loved how it came out. I love the shape and how you've formed the shape to match the shape of the Star Cruisers.

Well done! Smile

Thanks for the compliments everyone! Once LEGO release the next series of collectible minifigures, I will be using the genie head fro a Warp figure. Medium blue heads are hard to come by (they haven't even made a blank version for customisers to work with), so I was pretty lucky with Mira, and by the looks of things this genie head should be a good fit for Warp.

These images were a long time coming!

Every LEGO fan's favourite sight:

I designed the box myself on the computer:
LEGO BLoSC Img_9812

It came in three boxes, each of which had its own huge bag of bricks!!

I'll upload images of the completed product this afternoon, when I have a memory card reader that won't erase all of my photos.

Time for a piccie overload...

42 standing triumphantly with most of my LEGO Toy Story collection:

The ship is some 46cm/18.5" long/tall:

The prison cell, with Zurg being held captive:

The cockpit, with Buzz and Mira, Booster and XR lookalikes:

This hollow section serves as a secret storage compartment:

The thrusters (once there were five, now only three for accuracy):

42 with the other "BLoSC" sets:
LEGO BLoSC Img_0719

42 with my other LDD creations:
LEGO BLoSC Img_0720

Whew!

I also have some juicy information regarding the future of my LEGO creations.
First off, I am actually in the process of modifying 42, with some of the changes including heightened doorways, a container surrounding the thrusters (to conceal them better), and minor mods to move the roofing backwards.
In addition, I have decided to completely customise the Team Lightyear figures - Mira will feature new decals for her head and body (and possibly painted details on her hair), Booster will feature a custom clay head and a mostly brick-built body, and XR will feature decals on his face and chest, and will also be brick-built (though I'm having trouble making him the right size).
